Bridging Quantum and Classical Error Correction for Scalable Fault-tolerant Quantum Computing

Objective

Quantum computers promise breakthroughs in cryptography, chemistry, materials, optimisation and artificial intelligence. However, their progress is fundamentally limited by errors in fragile quantum hardware. Quantum error correction (QEC) is the key enabling technology to make quantum computing reliable and scalable. Nevertheless, current approaches remain fragmented across disciplines, inefficient, and not yet fully optimised for existing qubit platforms.

QuBriC will establish the first European doctoral network entirely dedicated to QEC with the aim of bridging classical coding theory and quantum information science for scalable, hardware-ready QEC. It integrates mature classical error-correction methodologies with quantum information principles into a unified framework covering theory, code design, decoding, hardware integration, and experimental validation. The network is uniquely structured to operate coherently across major qubit platforms, enabling systematic comparison and transfer of concepts.

QuBriC brings together 16 leading academic institutions and 7 major quantum computing companies to tackle the key QEC bottlenecks. At its core is an integrated research and training programme that develops doctoral candidates fluent across the full QEC stack. This prepares researchers to operate across disciplines and contribute to hardware-constrained QEC development. Through secondments and joint supervision across 11 countries, doctoral candidates gain direct exposure to diverse academic and industrial workflows in real-world quantum technology environments.

Aligned with the Horizon Europe and Digital Decade priorities on digital infrastructure, deep-tech skills and technological sovereignty, QuBriC strengthens Europe’s long-term capacity in fault-tolerant quantum computing. By delivering cross-domain researchers, open tools, training materials and validated methodologies, the network consolidates Europe’s sustainable leadership in quantum technologies.
