Integrated Pathways to RENEWable MEthane: Multidisciplinary Approaches for a Green Energy

Objective

RENEWME is designed to generate the interdisciplinary knowledge and skilled workforce needed to enable the large-scale, sustainable deployment of biomethane in Europe. Despite its strategic role in EU decarbonisation and circular-economy objectives, biomethane uptake remains uneven due to fragmented regulations, limited technological competitiveness, infrastructure constraints and insufficient societal awareness. RENEWME addresses these barriers through 12 coordinated doctoral projects advancing four integrated objectives: harmonise regulatory and market frameworks through cross-country policy analyses and best practices for certification, standardisation and cross-border integration; improve technical and sustainability performance by developing novel upgrading routes supported by techno-economic and sustainability assessment; design future-ready biomethane infrastructure via models for decentralised production, flexible grid integration and CO2-valorisation synergies; and enhance societal awareness and acceptance by analysing socio-cultural drivers and creating evidence-based stakeholder-engagement tools. RENEWME delivers an international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral training programme combining network-wide events, specialised seminars, transferable-skills modules and secondments across academia, industry, system operators and European associations. This environment equips DCs with hybrid competencies spanning regulation, technology, digital systems, sustainability and social sciences. The consortium brings together 11 beneficiaries and 8 associated partners covering technical, digital, economic, environmental, social and policy expertise, alongside leading industrial, infrastructure and sector organisations. By generating new knowledge, tools and skilled professionals, RENEWME will strengthen Europe’s innovation capacity and support a climate-neutral, circular and socially robust biomethane system aligned with the European Green Deal and REPowerEU.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
