Objective
SYNAPSE (Synergistic Neuromorphic Approaches for Scalable and Efficient Computing) addresses one of Europe’s most pressing technological challenges: the need for radically more efficient computing systems in the face of exponential data growth and increasingly AI-intensive applications. As digitalisation accelerates across industry, public services, and society, existing computing architectures—rooted in classical, power-hungry digital designs—are becoming unsustainable, placing constraints on Europe’s competitiveness and energy goals.
Neuromorphic computing offers a transformative alternative. Inspired by the brain’s ability to perform complex tasks with unparalleled energy efficiency, neuromorphic systems integrate memory and processing, exploit physical dynamics, and enable adaptive, low-power computation. These capabilities make them uniquely suited to the demands of next-generation AI, edge intelligence, sensing, and cyber-physical systems.
The SYNAPSE Doctoral Network brings together leading universities, research institutes, and industrial partners Leonardo, Sony Europe, Imaging Development Systems GmbH, Oriole Networks, E4, AlticeLabs, HIRO-MicroDataCenters to train 15 doctoral candidates (DCs) in the interdisciplinary foundations and applications of neuromorphic technologies. Through a programme spanning photonic and electronic neuromorphic hardware, novel architectures, algorithm–hardware co-design, and application-driven demonstrators, SYNAPSE will equip DCs with the technical expertise, innovation skills, and intersectoral experience needed to shape Europe’s future computing landscape. Through hands-on training and industrial secondments DCs will gain direct experience in addressing real-world challenges.
By fostering a new generation of scientific and industrial leaders, SYNAPSE aims to accelerate the deployment of energy-efficient, high-performance computing systems and reinforce Europe’s strategic position in the digital and post-digital economy.
