Using science-driven response diversity knowledge to leverage efficient ecosystem preservation and restoration

Objective

Ecosystem resilience is the capacity of an ecosystem to withstand natural and human-induced changes while maintaining core functions over time and space.

Response diversity (RD)—the variability in responses to environmental changes among ecosystem components—is a crucial mechanism underpinning ecosystem resilience. By enhancing adaptive capacity, RD contributes to ecosystem stability and long-term functionality. Despite this, RD remains insufficiently understood and underutilized in ecological management, conservation, and policy design.

Researchers have identified several critical uncertainties that hinder the scientific advancement and practical application of RD. In addition, and perhaps due to the research gaps, despite a wide consensus of RD’s importance for ecosystem resilience, RD is often overlooked in policy frameworks, restoration practices, and monitoring and management schemes.

ReDiLEEP aims to close these gaps by establishing an interdisciplinary Doctoral Network. By conducting cutting-edge research and equipping doctoral candidates with specialized expertise, ReDiLEEP will catalyse long-term advancements in ecosystem resilience and management. In particular, the program will
-build theoretical foundations
- develop measurable approaches
- connect research to practice.

ReDiLEEP will serve as a pivotal initiative, creating a robust science-policy-practice interface that firmly establishes RD as a cornerstone of ecosystem resilience. The program employs an integrated approach, empowering doctoral candidates with a comprehensive learning experience that spans theoretical, empirical, and practical domains. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, ReDiLEEP bridges critical gaps between ecological research, policy design, and practical application. Furthermore, participants will actively contribute to transformative change by aligning their work with the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and supporting the objectives of the UN Decade on Ecosystem
