Objective
BIOWELD-AI introduces a breakthrough in soft-tissue surgery by creating an intelligent electrosurgical system capable of recognising tissue type in real time and autonomously controlling energy delivery. Unlike traditional energy platforms that operate on fixed algorithms, depend on the surgeon’s experience, and often lead to variable outcomes and thermal damage, BIOWELD-AI enables a predictable and standardised welding/coagulation process.
The project develops Dr.Nic 2.0 — a next-generation soft-tissue welding platform that combines a high-speed sensor module with machine-learning algorithms trained on ≥10,000 structured clinical-technical parameterised cases. These cases are collected during real surgical procedures, where each operation generates around 100 individual welding/coagulation signal cycles. The system analyses these signals with microsecond precision, identifies tissue type and condition, and automatically selects or adjusts the optimal energy mode. This effectively transforms Dr.Nic 2.0 into a digital surgical assistant that enhances precision, reduces complications, and ensures reproducible results.
The project objectives are to: build a large, structured dataset of clinical-technical cases for AI training; develop and validate a real-time tissue-recognition algorithm with ≥95% accuracy; integrate the AI module into the commercial Dr.Nic 2.0 hardware platform; conduct clinical and economic validation; prepare regulatory documentation and ensure readiness for entry into EU markets.
The work will be carried out through a coordinated R&D programme combining data engineering, algorithmic development, hardware integration, and collaboration with leading Ukrainian clinical centres.
