Objective
Marine systems are under threat from Anthropogenic disturbances worldwide, and European oceans are no exception. Given the large socio-economic and environmental impacts of changes to marine species distributions and populations, it is critical to better understand and conserve them. Anthropogenic climate change is a large driver of shifts in marine species distributions, and changes to the Northeast Atlantic are particularly uncertain due to the possibility of both warming and cooling scenarios if currents shift. The proposed programme will recruit postdoctoral fellows to join an ambitious research project that combines marine spatial ecology, physiology, climate science, and oceanographic research to understand and predict the distributions of marine species of socioeconomic importance and conservation concern throughout the Northeast Atlantic under current conditions and diverse climate change scenarios.
Programme team members will collaborate closely through regular meetings, co-working sessions, annual symposia, and shared digital spaces. As part of this team, postdoctoral fellows recruited to the programme will be offered and encouraged to avail of extensive institutional, interdisciplinary, and project-focused trainings to ensure career progression and development. Potential career paths viable to the recruited postdoctoral fellows will include permanent academic positions but also careers in national governmental agency, non-governmental organizations, and industry, with significant potential for trans-national mobility across Europe. These path options will be facilitated in the Programme through broad inter-sectoral collaborations with agency partners such as the Marine Institute and Inland Fisheries Ireland, industry partners such as IBM and offshore renewable energy developers, multi-national data managing organizations such as the European Tracking Network, and interdisciplinary centres at Trinity College Dublin.
