Objective
"The Netherlands AI Factory will be a nationally hosted, Europe-oriented hub for high-performance AI innovation. The AI Factory will bring together cutting‐edge computing resources, advanced data management, and a collaborative expertise network to drive industrial, academic, and public sector advances in artificial intelligence. Leveraging the EuroHPC supercomputing ecosystem, in particular the future Dutch EuroHPC AI Facility, and connecting to distributed data sources (incl. the common European Data Spaces), the AI Factory will bridge the gap between AI research breakthroughs and their rapid, large-scale deployment in the Netherlands and beyond.
Our vision is motivated by several key drivers:
• A rapidly growing global demand for computing capacity driven by AI’s transformative potential in science, industry, and government;
• The need for a secure, scalable infrastructure that respects national and European data protection standards and supports confidential computing;
• The requirement to overcome common data reachability obstacles such as insufficient computational or storage resources, legal and regulatory uncertainties, lack of high-speed connectivity to data providers, and limitations in handling dynamic or sensitive datasets;
• The requirement to build and maintain a talent base covering all aspects of high-performance computing and AI;
• The strategic goal to foster tech sovereignty in an open manner, and ensure that the Netherlands and Europe remain at the forefront of AI-driven innovation, becoming less dependent on (American) big tech companies.
An overriding focus of the AI Factory to address these issues is ""Sensitive data"". The ability to handle personal (like health) data as well as IP-protected data is a key answer to today's AI challenges, notably digital sovereignty. Based on the extensive experience of the Netherlands and SURF in developing this ability, the AI Factory will be able to address these issues."
