Crossing the Threshold to Fault-tolerant Digital Neutral Atom Quantum Computing

Objective

Quantum computing promises transformative solutions for drug discovery, materials science, and optimization, yet current systems face fundamental bottlenecks that prevent industrial deployment. While neutral atom platforms offer superior scalability to millions of qubits, they suffer from operational dead time as quantum registers must be completely reloaded after each computation cycle, which prohibits the execution of industry-relevant quantum algorithms on error-corrected quantum computers. This limitation threatens Europe's quantum sovereignty as US competitors with greater resources advance alternative approaches.
planqc addresses this critical bottleneck through groundbreaking continuous atom loading technology that maintains quantum registers during operation. With high-flux atomic sources, we replenish alkaline-earth atoms while preserving existing qubits, transforming neutral atom systems from batch processing to continuous operation. Building on our demonstrated maintenance of 1,000+ atom arrays for over 90 minutes, RUBIQON will advance from TRL6 demonstrations to an error-corrected quantum computer with 10,000 physical qubits by 2028. This breakthrough requires EIC Accelerator support to bridge the gap between our R&D achievements and industrial implementation.
RUBIQON enables development of production-ready continuous loading and catalyzes our scaling to fault tolerance. As Europe's only developer of digital neutral atom quantum computers, planqc leverages exclusive access to Max-Planck-Institute innovations and European photonics supply chains. RUBIQON establishes European leadership in the race toward fault-tolerant quantum computing, ensuring technological sovereignty in this strategic technology.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
