EurOpean, low-cost, safe and sustainable LiMFP||graphite battery cells at indUStrial scale

Objective

Europe needs to develop high-performance and cost-competitive batteries for its large-scale electrification and strategic autonomy. OLiMPUS addresses this need by demonstrating Made-in-Europe LMFP‖graphite cells delivering 550 Wh/L and 220 Wh/kg. Cell materials, electrode design, and production methods are co-developed through design-to-cost and safe-and-sustainable-by-design (SSbD) approaches, supported by digital acceleration tools. Next-life and recycling are considered from the outset.

OLiMPUS combines LMFP80:20 cathode materials and aqueous electrode processing with low CO2 footprint synthetic graphite anode active materials and self-extinguishing electrolytes, all of which give OLiMPUS cells clear market advantages. Two aqueous electrode manufacturing routes (wet and quasi-dry) and innovative formation protocols are explored for NMP-free, low-cost, CRM-light and SSbD-compliant production.

In just 48 months, the OLiMPUS team will produce 132 EV-grade cells in pouch and prismatic formats at 10–80 Ah scale (TRL7). Production from three different semi-automated pilot lines will demonstrate manufacturing readiness, robustness, and compatibility with European factories. Extensive characterization will link performance, lifetime and swelling with trace signs of degradation, generating comprehensive datasets used to parametrize cell models whichforecast safety and lifetime early in the design phase. Operando sensing solutions and physics-based + machine-learning models will guide designs, reduce testing time and pinpoint degradation mechanisms. A holistic assessment of sustainability, safety and cost will address total cost of ownership and total life-cycle impacts when cells are integrated into maritime and road EV system digital twins. OLiMPUS cells will be UN38.3 certified for transport safety and are expected to reach EUCAR safety level 2 or 3.

The exploitation plan outlines a credible path to European value-chain scale-up, with market entry targeted for 2032.
