Highly Efficient, eco-friendly, Resilient, & Fully integrated, Real-time Innovative inland waterway transport, Enhancing multimodal competitiveness via Digitalisation

Objective

The project develops and validates a HERFRIED Smart IWT Framework that fully integrates digital and physical solutions, including smart vessels, smart infrastructure, smart data, and smart administration, within multimodal logistics chains. The project delivers an interoperable Framework, enabling real-time coordination, standardised processes, and seamless inclusion of IWT into multimodal logistics. The Framework serves as a common foundation for combining innovative solutions, use cases, and pilots, generating an innovation ecosystem that accelerates the green and digital transition. 7 industry-led pilots across key European corridors validate solutions at TRL 7, generating transferable, replicable adoption pathways. HERFRIED incorporates key innovations: cross-border RIS-based automation, LoRaWAN tracking of non-AIS barges, adaptive transshipment planning, multimodal capacity discovery and routing, real-time adaptive coordination, and IWT execution and visibility to improve operational efficiency, coordination, and resilience. These solutions operate within the Process Space, forming a scalable, interoperable ecosystem that enables seamless integration of IWT into multimodal logistics across Europe. The HERFRIED Smart IWT Framework provides stakeholders with real-time insight into transport progress, ensuring operational and regulatory data are entered once and automatically reused to increase efficiency, modal share, and sustainability. It also supports policy recommendations, RIS standardisation, and coherence with EU initiatives such as NAIADES III, DTLF, EMDS, and eFTI. The alignment of digital solutions with operational realities and policy objectives enables the Framework to support coordinated decision-making, interoperability, and predictable deployment, while facilitating transferable and replicable adoption pathways across European corridors that support modal shift, efficiency, and environmental improvements.
