Sustainable upscaling of cost- and energy-aware engineering for smart sustainable operation of rechargeable batteries with advanced LMFP materials

Objective

SUCCESSOR proposes to develop the next generation of low-cost Li-ion batteries using LMFP as cathode, graphite anode and liquid electrolyte. SUCCESSOR will cover the LMFP material development from synthesis and particle optimisation to production in 100-kilogram scale. A specific electrolyte for LMFP will be designed for high performance, safety and sustainability. LMFP cathodes will be produced with aqueous and dry processing and initially tested in 5Ah pouch cells, which will be complemented with sensors. Lifetime predictions and state of health analysis will be improved via sensors. Using the experimental data, an advanced cell diagnostic tool, based on Machine Learning algorithms, will be developed. To validate the advancements, detailed characterisations at bulk, surface and cell level will be performed. Iterative feedback loops will be introduced for continuous improvements and understanding of LMFP. Finally, EV-grade 40 Ah cells will demonstrate the SUCCESSOR innovations from material to cell production at TRL7.
Along with the technological developments, SUCCESSOR will focus on safe and sustainable by design (SSbD) and industrialisation. Comprehensive SSbD principles will be applied, life cycle assessment will be performed and innovative recycling strategies will be established. SUCCESSOR will also develop a cell-to-pack design to illustrate the compatibility of LMFP. With strong industry-oriented consortium, SUCCESSOR will demonstrate credible pathways for LMFP innovations with a cost of 57 €/kWh at pack level. To de-risk LMFP commercialisation and accelerate European market uptake, feasibility assessment, techno-economic analysis and business planning will be performed.
By SUCCESSOR’s implementation of the innovation and industrialisation plans, Europe will have access to affordable electric mobility, enhance the competitiveness of the European battery value chain, while lowering its dependence on non-EU market.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
