Objective
Europe’s pathway to climate-neutral mobility, aviation and industrial leadership requires batteries that combine step-change performance with scalable, sustainable, and cost-efficient manufacturing. Current Gen3 cells face limitations from solvent- and energy-intensive electrode processing, low areal loading, and safety bottlenecks, which are particularly critical for e-aviation and other applications that demand very high gravimetric energy density.
ELEVATE addresses these challenges by leveraging a retrofitted European production ecosystem and a multidisciplinary consortium to vertically integrate advanced materials, cell design, and adapted process-specific machinery. The project develops a manufacturable quasi-solid-state 21700 battery with gravimetric energy density beyond the state-of-the-art, meeting premium e-aviation requirements while ensuring safety and industrial readiness.
Two core process innovations drive ELEVATE: solvent-free electrode processing for higher-loading electrodes with reduced energy consumption and controlled in-line polymerisation to create a stable, non-flammable electrolyte matrix that improves interfaces and ion transport. Closely linked to cell performance, the project combines in-line metrology, traceability, advanced process control, and modelling to optimise critical parameters across dry-mixing, coating, winding, and quasi-solid-state integration. Pilot-line results will be benchmarked against state-of-the-art references to quantify cost and environmental footprint.
By prioritising European sourcing and retrofitted EU manufacturing equipment, ELEVATE ensures rapid transferability across European production sites, strengthening competitiveness, resilience, and the transition to next-generation high-energy battery technologies.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
