MultI-physicS integrated and ai-driven digital plaTform for accelerated validation of ageing, Reliability and sAfety across the battery vaLue chain

Objective

MISTRAL addresses a key bottleneck in Europe’s battery value chain: the time, cost and fragmentation of battery testing and validation, which slow innovation and market entry for safe and competitive battery systems. As battery technologies and applications diversify and regulatory demands on safety, ageing and lifecycle transparency increase, long-duration and late-stage validation practices are no longer adequate.
The main objective of MISTRAL is to transform battery testing and validation from a development bottleneck into a strategic accelerator for European battery innovation. The project will develop, validate and demonstrate an integrated framework for accelerated multi-physical and virtual testing of battery ageing, reliability and safety across the battery value chain, from cell to pack level and covering first-life, second-life and stationary applications.
MISTRAL combines early-life multi-physical characterisation, AI-assisted experimental design, physics-based and data-driven modelling and advanced X-in-the-Loop validation. Using only the first ~100 ageing cycles, it enables early prediction of state of health and remaining useful life with ≤3–5% error for most cells, reducing experimental testing effort by 20–40% and shortening validation cycles by up to 40%. Generative and agentic AI optimise test design, increase information gain per experiment by ≥30% and automate test planning.
These capabilities are embedded in adaptive Battery Digital Twins and a holistic digital platform providing traceable, reusable and standard-aligned validation evidence. Three use cases, EV passenger car, e-bus and stationary energy storage systems, demonstrate relevance under realistic conditions. MISTRAL is expected to reduce validation costs by up to 30%, reach ≥80% agreement between virtual and experimental safety classification, and contribute to standardisation and the Digital Battery Passport, strengthening Europe’s battery competitiveness and technological leadership.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Coordinator

FUNDACIO EURECAT
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
