Modular manufacturing architecture for extruded solid-state lithium-metal batteries for high-performance mobility

Objective

The transition to solid-state batteries (SSBs) is critical to achieving safer, lighter and more energy-dense energy storage for next-generation mobility applications, yet industrial-scale manufacturing of SSBs remains constrained by high costs, low yields, and limited compatibility with existing lithium-ion production infrastructure. MAXIMA addresses these challenges by developing and validating an integrated, solvent-free manufacturing upgrade for advanced SSB cells that can be deployed on existing battery production lines.

MAXIMA combines innovations in materials processing, roll-to-roll manufacturing, laser-based surface structuring and cutting, and advanced digital process monitoring to enable scalable production of high-performance solid-state cells. Key developments include continuous extrusion-based processing of composite cathodes and solid electrolytes, roll-to-roll laser processing of ultrathin lithium metal anodes, and a novel stacked, tab-less cell architecture optimised for demanding automotive and aviation applications. These technologies are supported by in-line metrology, machine-learning-enabled monitoring, and digital models that link process conditions to material quality, yield and cell performance.

MAXIMA will demonstrate these integrated manufacturing modules on a pilot production line, targeting improvements in yield, energy efficiency and cost compared to current SSB manufacturing. SSbD principles are embedded throughout, supported by life-cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis

By focusing on drop-in upgrades compatible with existing infrastructure, MAXIMA reduces investment risk for manufacturers while strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy in battery manufacturing. The project supports the EU’s climate, industrial and digital transition objectives by enabling the cost-effective, sustainable and competitive production of next-generation solid-state batteries for clean mobility.
