Objective
Despite growing demand for electric vehicles and stationary energy storage, battery development remains slow and costly due to reliance on extensive physical testing. ACCELERATE addresses this by establishing a hybrid physical–virtual (X-in-the-Loop) validation framework that replaces exhaustive empirical testing with model-driven qualification supported by targeted experiments.
ACCELERATE develops physics-based, multi-scale battery models grounded in advanced experimental characterisation, including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, computed tomography, swelling and pressure measurements, and thermal-runaway characterisation. These measurements are used to parameterise and validate mechanistic models capturing ageing, thermal behaviour and safety limits at cell level, and to propagate this understanding to module-level simulations. Virtual testing is used to explore operating space and design sensitivities, with focused module-level experiments to validate under realistic conditions. ACCELERATE extends validation beyond cells by modelling and experimentally characterising critical non-cell components, including junction boxes, whose degradation can strongly affect pack reliability and safety.
ACCELERATE delivers standardised, interoperable characterisation outputs, including advanced battery datasheets and a three-axis cell grading scheme based on capacity, internal resistance and self-discharge. These outputs improve data reuse across the battery value chain, enabling integration of European-produced cells with fewer validation loops, higher confidence in ageing and safety behaviour, and direct support for Digital Battery Passport implementation.
By shifting validation to targeted model validation, ACCELERATE enables earlier design decisions, fewer validation iterations and faster convergence to robust pack designs. The approach supports up to 70% reduction in battery pack development time, corresponding to 12–18 months shorter time-to-market

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
