Objective
Cities currently account for nearly three-quarters of global energy consumption and 70% of greenhouse gas emissions, positioning them as pivotal actors in achieving the Paris Agreement goals. As urban populations are projected to reach 70% by 2050, the Urban Transitions Mission (UTM) of Mission Innovation - a flagship initiative co-leads by the European Commission, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy and JPI Urban Europe - works with an ambitious global cohort of cities to demonstrate integrated urban pathways to net-zero, resilient and people-centred futures, through clean energy innovation and urban governance.
UTM accelerates urban transitions by brokering access to tools, expertise and partnerships needed to succeed in elevating their climate ambitions. Through this proposal, UTM launches a revamped Urban Transitions Mission Centre - the UTMC 2.0 portal. This AI-powered hub will strengthens capacity building for cities and accelerates knowledge exchange with peers, academia and the private sector. UTMC 2.0 will help streamline access to solutions through a newly launched UTM Academy, aligning guidance, knowledge and training opportunities along the steps of the Net-Zero Urban Transitions Framework. A reinforced Funding & Financing Helpdesk will provide expert advisory on investment plans and technical assistance, while research and cities can connect in Action learning Group to co-create solution to the most urgent R&I priorities for cities. By engaging a Global Innovation Alliance of partners - including national governments, international organizations, and the private sector - UTM will work with cities to serve as deep demonstrators and implement over 50 pilot actions by 2030. Through bridging the gap between research, deployment and implementation, UTM helps to drive the systemic shifts required to reach critical tipping points in the cost and scale of urban net-zero solutions, ensuring a resilient and climate-neutral future worldwide.
