Objective
The tRail5.0 project is designed to support the transition of the European rail freight sector towards Industry 5.0 understood as a sustainable, human-centric and resilient socio-technical system. By addressing a critical gap in the current European rail research landscape, the project responds to the absence of a coherent, measurable and decision-oriented framework capable of translating Industry 5.0 principles into actionable guidance for rail freight operations, placing safety, reliability and efficiency (SRE) at the centre of analysis and evaluation. These three dimensions act as transversal axes, ensuring that Industry 5.0 principles are operationalised through measurable performance indicators and decision-relevant outcomes.
Rather than developing new technologies, tRail5.0 adopts a low-TRL exploratory approach focused on conceptual clarity, methodological rigour and evidence-based analysis. The Atlantic Corridor will be tRail5.0 main use case, being a representative empirical laboratory, enabling validation under real operational, governance and cross-border conditions, while ensuring transferability to other TEN-T contexts. The project capitalises on outputs from relevant EU-Rail Flagship Areas, using them as structured sources of empirical evidence rather than as parallel R&I activities.
As a result, tRail5.0 delivers a validated set of challenges, critical success factors, drivers and risks for the implementation of Industry 5.0 in rail freight, a structured framework for measuring progress in SRE, and concrete recommendations for pilot projects and public policy pathways. The project directly contributes to the objectives of the Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking and the EU-Rail Master Plan, supporting the development of a more competitive, resilient and future-ready European rail system.
