From Legacy System X to Building Energy Assistants: Enabling Flexibility, Comfort and Efficiency

Objective

The main goal of FLEX-BEAThe main goal of FLEX-BEAT is to deliver an innovative, next generation solution for building energy and flexibility management, the Building Energy Assistant (BEA). BEAs combine advanced AI and user centric design to significantly enhance the smartness of buildings and modernise legacy building automation systems.

The development will be supported by a BEA Framework consisting of three integrated software packages: 1) the User Empowerment Package that provides GenAI based user interfaces and digital twins of occupants that learn and adapt to user needs and behaviour. 2) the Energy and Flexibility Management package that features innovative digital twin driven control methods seamlessly combining energy efficiency with standard compliant flexibility management. 3) the Cost efficient Replication Support Package that streamlines DevSecOps and automates integration of legacy systems and data sources through GenAI based tools and data spaces.

The BEAs will be co created together with stakeholders from nine pilots in Finland, Greece, Germany, Slovenia and Lithuania. The pilots cover a wide range of building types, user groups, and span all five EU climate zones defined for Smart Readiness Indicator assessments. Pilot specific stakeholder committees, formed by occupants, facility managers, owners and energy system stakeholders, will play a key role throughout all three phases of iterative BEA design, development and validation.

We expect that the BEAs will fully reach the market one year after the conclusion of the project. In five years, BEAs will have been deployed in over 60,000 buildings. By 2045 BEAs will help buildings cut life cycle energy use by 55 % and reduce annual GHG emissions by 6 Mt through smarter operation, comfort first control and active participation in flexibility markets. DSF enabled by BEAs will avoid 2.5 TWh/year of RES curtailment, support resilience and affordability, and provide 70 % annual cost savings for consumers.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
