EUropean energy communities empowered for grid-integrated, cross-sectoral and co-owned ENERgy future

Objective

EU4ENER delivers a beyond-State-of-the-Art (SoA) ecosystem designed to manage and empower Energy Communities (REC/CECs), driving a just digital and green transformation toward smart grid-ready local systems. The project transitions from isolated Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) to a holistic, federated Community Energy Management System (CEMS). This architecture unlocks localized flexibility for cooperative Demand Response (DR), significantly enhancing power grid robustness while maximizing community self-sufficiency and energy efficiency.
EU4ENER solves systemic challenges through a dual-pillar approach:
1.- *User Empowerment*: Equipping citizens with automated control over flexible assets and a blockchain-based P2P marketplace for energy trading.
2.- *System Operator Support*: Providing DSOs with AI-driven digital tools for grid diagnostics and power flow optimization at the secondary substation level.
Technical innovation is centered on a multi-layered System of Systems (SoS) utilizing the Energy Hub concept for sector coupling (electricity, mobility, heating). Key outputs include: AI-driven predictive analytics (NILM/forecasting), Edge-level Model Predictive Control (MPC) for real-world asset orchestration, and SGAM-compliant semantic interoperability (IEC CIM). To ensure long-term sustainability, EU4ENER integrates Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) via a co-design framework and social practice-based interventions to turn passive consumers into active energy managers.
Validated at TRL 7-8 across 6 large-scale European Living Labs, EU4ENER targets quantified impacts: a 30% reduction in energy costs, unlocking 30% of untapped demand flexibility, and supporting a 45% local RES hosting capacity. By project end, EU4ENER will deliver replication blueprints and contribute to the BRIDGE initiative, ensuring a scalable, socially inclusive, and technically superior path to European energy decentralization.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
