ReEnsemble – Decision support for optimal building system combinations across Whole-Life Carbon, Circularity, Cost, and Technical Performance

Objective

Buildings lock in carbon emissions, costs, and material waste for decades. Yet choices on envelopes, structures, and systems are often made in silos, missing practical low-carbon and circular options. ReEnsemble aims to break these silos by delivering a decision-support framework and optimisation engine for complete Building System Assemblies (BSAs), i.e. coordinated packages of construction products and technical building systems for new builds, renovation, and adaptive reuse.

Using interoperable data, ReEnsemble develops a Framework assessing Whole-Life Carbon (WLC), circularity, Life-Cycle Cost (LCC), and technical performance in one consistent workflow. The methodology is tailored to systematically support five core use cases: optimising material and system combinations for new builds, evaluating retrofit strategies for renovations, guiding complex retain-versus-rebuild decisions for adaptive reuse, setting reference profiles for WLC benchmarking, and verifying targets for procurement
and on-site conformity. Instead of black box answers, the engine rapidly translates these multi-metric evaluations into practical, automated decision dossiers, validating results and performance across four climatic contexts.

Crucially, ReEnsemble targets sector-level impact beyond isolated technical innovation. By delivering benchmark bands and standardisation packages, the project strengthens links to policy and real market pathways. The project is positioned to shape the implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) WLC requirements, the Level(s) framework, and CEN/TC 350 standards. By embedding these decisive factors into public procurement processes, ReEnsemble will accelerate the market uptake of circular solutions. The project targets at least 20% lower upfront carbon while keeping LCC within +/-10% of baselines, ensuring a viable transition to climate-neutral buildings.
