A Pan-European Generative AI-based Digital Spine for a Software-defined Interoperable Smart Energy System

Objective

GenAISIS will design, implement and validate a pan-European GenAI -powered Energy Digital Spine, aimed to turn on actual fragmented yet centralised energy system into an interoperable GenAI-streamlined Software-Defined Smart Grid. The EU-EDS acts as an Energy Meta-Operating System that combines virtualised energy assets, GenAI models and digital twins to enable decentralised coordination across transmission, distribution and cross-sector energy ecosystems, while integrating legacy OT/IT, EVs, smart buildings.

The EU-EDS comprises four tightly coupled planes: (a)a CEEDS-aligned data plane enabling sovereign, cyber-secure virtualisation and sharing of heterogeneous data assets and AI models via Connector-as-a-Service and LLM-assisted semantic interoperability; (b)an intelligence plane combining grid foundation and physics-aware models, compound GenAI tools and agentic Digital Twins for forecasting, optimisation, “what-if” analysis and resilience under extreme scenarios; (c)an orchestration plane delivering intent-driven green IoT-Edge-Cloud coordination of AI models across AI Factories and Energy TEFs; (d)a trustworthiness plane combining AI Act–aligned compliance-by-design, zero-trust security, with runtime monitoring, AI explainability and Human-In-The-Loop hypervision for safety-critical decisions.

A unique consortium of leading universities, RTOs, ICT providers, TSOs/DSOs, utilities, integrators and associations -formally supported by ENTSO-E and reinforced by six AI Factories- will demonstrate GenAISIS in 10 large-scale multi-country pilots spanning TSO/DSO operations, congestion management, hypervision, predictive O&M, grid resilience, energy communities, bidirectional EV charging/DR, industrial flexibility, district heating, wind O&M. GenAISIS will adopt a collaborative exploitation model, where reusable open-source software, joint governance model and standardization contributions, speed up GenAI adoption, European AI leading role and energy transition.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
