Value-chain optimisation for renewable fuels

Objective

The EU’s transition to climate neutrality requires a rapid scale-up of advanced biofuels and Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin VALOR targets the systemic phase-out of fossil fuels by optimising advanced biofuel and RFNBO value chains through eight technical sub-routes. VALOR addresses critical challenge domains including fragmentation, static decision-making, technical process limitations, siloed sustainability metrics, and regulatory gaps. Key innovations include mapping 4+ sustainable feedstock classes across four European regions(UK, Finland, Spain, and Turkey) to mitigate seasonal and geopolitical volatility. The project deploys a TRL 6 AI-Decision Support System (AI-DSS) as its cognitive core, integrating geospatial logistics, process simulation, and geopolitical risk scenarios to de-risk midstream investments and achieve over 90% predictive accuracy for techno-economic metrics. Technical advancements move conversion processes to TRL 5–6, specifically developing an intensified 2-in-1 reactor to boost single-pass carbon conversion to over 50%. Multi-dimensional viability is demonstrated via an integrated LCSA framework that quantifies environmental, economic, and social impacts, targeting GHG reductions of up to 91.5%. VALOR aims to reduce the SAF-fossil fuel cost gap significantly by 2035, aiming for a price convergence of €31.1/GJ. The project strengthens EU strategic autonomy by substituting imported fossil kerosene with domestic residues and CO2, contributing to a sector projected to add €60 billion annually to the EU economy by 2040. Through an active policy feedback loop involving an External Advisory Board of over 20 organizations and pre-normative contributions to bodies like CEN/TC 406, VALOR ensures regulatory alignment and industrial bankability

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
