Digitalising Energy and Optimising Flexibility in Smart and Efficient Buildings

Objective

Europe’s building sector still accounted for 33% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 and 40% of final energy consumption, while fragmented building digital infrastructures and uneven Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) uptake keep demand-side flexibility underutilised. DEOS (Digitalising Energy and Optimising Flexibility in Smart and Efficient Buildings) will deliver a holistic Open flex-aware smart management ecosystem structured around Social, Connectivity and Flexibility dimensions. A Societal Readiness Framework (SRF) and Societal Readiness Knowledge Hub will embed SSH-based co-design, inclusivity, transparency and benefit-sharing, strengthening trust and capability across building users (including vulnerable groups), facility managers and energy actors, supported by more than 10 community workshops engaging more than 500 citizens. On the technology side, DEOS upgrades BMS/BEMS through a vendor-agnostic building connectivity stack and a GenAI-enabled interoperability framework, enabling secure, semantically harmonised data and authorised control endpoints via a Universal Building API and a federated edge-enabled intelligence architecture. AI-based flexibility services and user-centric GenAI Discovery Apps will quantify inefficiencies, test operational strategies and execute comfort-aware demand response, complemented by a Flexibility enhanced SRI toolkit providing a Flexibility Readiness Profile. Demonstrated at TRL8 in five EU pilots (ES, EL, FR, NL, PL) with at least 1,000 users involved in different building typologies and target groups, DEOS targets an 11.3% reduction of aggregated final energy demand and a 16.7% reduction of electrical peak demand, enabling validated flexibility activations and scalable replication through exploitation packages, business models and roadmaps.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
