MODEL-DRIVEN DIGITAL TWINS FOR RELIABLE AND AUTONOMOUS WIND OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

Objective

TwinD will improve the reliability of wind energy systems and optimise operations and maintenance by combining model-centric digital twins with scalable cloud and edge execution. The project targets the key bottlenecks that limit today’s wind O&M digitalisation: uncertainty in failure-risk forecasting and diagnosis, fragmented toolchains and data silos, and the difficulty of scaling digital-twin workflows from pilot assets to fleet level.

TwinD will deliver five interoperable key results: (1) model-centric digital-twin engineering with governed models and traceable change management; (2) uncertainty-aware failure-risk forecasting and what-if simulation; (3) continuous monitoring and diagnosis with technician-oriented visualisation and training assets; (4) risk-aware maintenance scheduling that remains feasible under operational and market constraints; and (5) a secure, reproducible cloud backbone that automates deployment, execution and evidence packaging. TwinD follows a closed digital-twin loop: digital shadows ingest operational data to keep models aligned with reality, while descriptive (monitoring), predictive (risk forecasting) and prescriptive (maintenance scheduling) analytics are executed reproducibly on a secure cloud backbone. Results will be validated through five use cases covering the operator-aggregator-TSO triangle, ensuring relevance for real O&M workflows, grid constraints and market-facing requirements, and enabling replication beyond the pilots.

TwinD directly contributes to the work programme topic by reducing wind-system risks and uncertainties and enabling more reliable, cost-effective O&M. By delivering standardisable interfaces, open reference artefacts and validated TRL4-5 evidence, TwinD also supports broader impacts of a more efficient, secure and competitive renewable energy supply and strengthens European capabilities in digital-twin-based wind operations.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
