Selectal: Scalable, Selective, and Low-Cost Recovery of Critical Metals from Complex Waste

Objective

Seloxium is shifting industrial waste from liability to asset. Across Europe, critical metals are lost in chemical and mining waste streams that are too diluted, hazardous or complex for today’s recovery systems. Most are incinerated or exported, with producers losing up to 65% of the metal’s value and facing high costs, emissions, and regulatory risk. Existing solutions are too slow, fragile or centralised to operate at source.

Seloxium’s breakthrough, Selectal, is a liquid metal-binding reagent that enables fast, selective, and robust recovery from even the most challenging waste. It works in a single aqueous phase, eliminating the phase barriers that slow or foul other technologies. Selectal recovers over 96% of target metals like rhodium, palladium, gold and rare earths with over 99% purity in just hours.

This opens the door to modular, on-site recovery. Seloxium’s containerised system delivers a clean, decentralised alternative to incineration and off-site refining. With EIC support, Seloxium will complete TRL 8 by designing, building and piloting its first 1,000 L/day modular demonstrator unit on a pilot customer’s site. This will validate performance, automate core processes, and demonstrate commercial viability.

The project directly supports the EIC Accelerator’s mission: Selectal is a deep tech platform with global scale potential, addressing strategic EU priorities in critical raw materials, circularity, and clean industry.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
