Objective
Endovascular interventions are essential to treat life-threatening conditions such as acute ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction and complex peripheral vascular disease. Yet access to these minimally invasive, time-critical procedures remains limited by the concentration of specialist centres, workforce shortages and highly manual, operator-dependent workflows. In stroke in particular, every minute of delay leads to irreversible brain damage, but many patients cannot receive timely thrombectomy due to transfer delays or lack of on-site expertise.
Nanoflex Robotics is developing a first-in-class Robotic Intervention System (RIS) enabling magnetically steered endovascular navigation and laying the foundation for remote interventions. At its core is a compact electromagnetic field generator providing real-time, three-dimensional control of an ultra-flexible magnetic guidewire inside the vasculature. This enables precise navigation in complex anatomy with reduced vessel stress and fewer device exchanges compared to conventional techniques.
Commercialization follows a staged strategy. An initial bedside setting will introduce magnetic steering into routine workflows, improving speed, safety and ease of use. The system will then expand to control room and teleoperated configurations, allowing specialists to perform complex procedures remotely and bringing expertise to the patient rather than transferring the patient to the expert.
The REACT project will complete clinical validation, regulatory approval and manufacturing readiness for EU market entry in the bedside setting for peripheral vascular indications. In parallel, it will advance teleoperation capabilities, enabling subsequent expansion in Europe and the U.S. to neurovascular procedures, including thrombectomy. By overcoming geographic and workforce barriers, Nanoflex’ technology can expand access to time-critical interventions, reduce preventable disability and strengthen Europe’s leadership in medical robotics.
