Objective
MedicQuant ApS is a Danish deep-tech company spun out of Aarhus University in 2019 to address a critical need in emergency medicine: rapid, accurate quantification of small molecules from patient blood samples.
Our initial product addresses a critical unmet need in the treatment of stroke patients who are on Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs).
For these patients, the life-saving thrombolysis therapy cannot be given if DOAC concentrations are too high, due to the elevated risk of fatal intracranial bleeding. Conventional lab tests take over 40 minutes - unacceptable when every 15-minute delay raises mortality 4% and severe disability 7%. Our solution aims to deliver a fast and reliable drug concentrations that empowers clinicians to make safer, faster treatment decisions in these high-stakes scenarios.
Our patent-pending portable platform provides lab-grade accuracy in under ten minutes from a blood sample. A single-use cartridge employs novel flow-front technology, then is read by a stand-alone benchtop instrument, enabling evidence-based management of DOAC strokes within the critical time window. MedicQuant measures individual DOAC levels directly in whole blood, with no sample preparation, via an innovative point-of-care method.
Usability studies at Bispebjerg Hospital (Denmark) and University College London (UK) plus large-scale testing at University Hospital Tübingen (Germany) confirm performance; an instrument is already in use at Bispebjerg Hospital. The technology has won Best Startup (2019), EIT Health MedTech Bootcamp (2020), and an EIC Women-in-TechEU (2023) grant.
By 2030 we aim to embed our test in EU and US stroke guidelines, reach €37 million revenue, and grow to a 41-person team. We will then extend to other DOAC emergencies, additional drug classes - antibiotics, anticancer agents, immunosuppressants - and new regions.
