Breakthrough GNSS meteorology technology for accurate hyperlocal weather forecasts and prediction of severe weather across the globe

Objective

Climate change is causing the weather to become more extreme and volatile. Over the last two decades, the number of extreme weather events has increased by 83% and the related annual economic losses have grown to over €200 billion. Despite the best sustainability and decarbonization efforts to resolve the climate crisis, businesses and societies already face increasingly disruptive floods, droughts, storms, extreme colds and heatwaves around the globe to which they need to adapt today. To achieve this, we need better weather intelligence through more holistic monitoring of the global weather, both spatially and temporally.
Skyfora delivers a solution through a breakthrough GNSS Meteorology technology that dual-purposes existing telecom and other fixed networks with embedded dual-band GNSS receivers into an exceptionally powerful weather monitoring system. The ongoing deployment of 5G has spawned a globally dense network of GNSS receivers in telecom networks, which we can turn into weather measurement sensors with a simple software update. This results in a very low-cost and highly scalable solution that will enable 4D weather tomography, providing high temporal and spatial resolution data on 3D atmospheric refractivity, moisture fields, moisture gradients and their advection, which is essential for improved modelling accuracy of atmospheric weather conditions and prediction of severe weather events. Our technology’s deployment coincides with the emergence of AI weather
models that require vast amounts of real measurement data as input to learn contemporary weather patterns and provide highly accurate weather forecasts, which already have proven to substantially outperform the existing state-of-the-art Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. Integrating the vast volumes of our GNSS weather data into these models for training and inference will be the key for unlocking the quantum leap forward in weather forecasting.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
