Objective
Silicon is a critical raw material for the European Union and an essential input for energy, digital and industrial manufacturing. Customers depend on stable supply, predictable costs and compliance with rising climate requirements. This project addresses these needs directly.
The objective is to demonstrate a new electricity-driven route for producing metallurgical-grade silicon with lower direct carbon emissions than conventional production. By removing fossil carbon from the core reduction step, the process reduces exposure to fuel price volatility and limits carbon-related cost risks. Modular production units replace very large furnaces, improving operational flexibility and supply reliability.
With EIC support, we will optimise our current process for scale-up and design, build and operate a single cell pilot equivalent to a 1,000 tonne per year production unit. The pilot will validate stable operation, product recovery and repeatability under industrial conditions. Each unit functions as a standard building block, allowing production to scale through replication rather than large, capital-intensive installations.
For customers, this approach enables competitive silicon supply with lower emissions, improved cost predictability and reduced supply risk. It supports long term procurement planning while contributing to European objectives on industrial decarbonisation and security of supply for critical raw materials.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
