Objective
SFERELATO aims to promote an ethical transition in digital research through the development and implementation of a flexible and proactive ethics and integrity framework that embeds protection of established and emerging digital vulnerabilities within research performing organisations (RPOs). The innovation and validation phase of the project includes: systematic knowledge consolidation of current and emerging ethical challenges and vulnerabilities in digital and AI research, as well stakeholder-informed best practices, needs and gaps in digital research; expansion of the CHANGER project’s toolkit, which is directly relevant to the expected outcomes and target groups of SFERELATO, with new components to strengthen its responsiveness to AI- and digitally-mediated research and enhance the research integrity culture across researchers and RPOs; development of training materials, guidance documents and delivery of training to researchers, RECs, ethics and integrity experts, enabling them to recognise known and emerging digital vulnerabilities and implement appropriate mitigation measures; pilot-testing of the expanded toolkit with practitioners across countries, and establishment of an interdisciplinary Community of Practice to transfer the framework beyond the project and across EU and non-EU countries. The operationalisation phase includes the development of: a step-by-step Operational plan to integrate the proposed adaptive governance model into organisational culture, workflows, and accountability structures; a Seal of Ethics and Integrity Excellence, as a quality label for RPOs demonstrating exemplary research practices; a policy roadmap for research ethics and integrity in digital research to ensure a smoother digital transition that is inclusive for all. SFERELATO is expected to help researchers and RPOs build a robust ethics and integrity framework to address ethical challenges and prevent or mitigate risks of digital exclusion and associated vulnerabilities.
