Science comes to town 2028: CurioCities

Objective

"Curiosity is the driving force behind inspiration, experimentation, research, and innovation. Inspired by this principle, the 2028 edition of the Science comes to town initiative: ""CurioCities"" will reconnect citizens across Europe with the foundations of science, fostering curiosity, strengthening critical thinking, and rebuilding trust in research and innovation at a time when misinformation increasingly challenges democratic societies.
Bringing together four host cities: Braga (Portugal), Durham (UK), Heraklion (Greece), and Linz (Austria), strategically selected from countries representing moderate and strong innovators, CurioCities will transform urban spaces into vibrant platforms for science engagement through flagship events, citizen science initiatives, living labs, foresight activities, competitions, and youth programmes. Citizens will actively explore how research works and how EU-funded projects address societal challenges ranging from climate change and digital transformation to health and sustainability. The project will also extend its reach to Europe’s outermost regions through Satellite Nodes in La Réunion and the Azores, ensuring that geographically remote communities are connected to the European research ecosystem and can actively participate in CurioCities activities.
CurioCities is expected to directly engage more than 0.8 million citizens though public events and innovative outreach formats, organise more than 600 events, and reach more than 10 million people through large-scale communication campaigns. Two policy-insight milestones, an EU Presidency Event and a Mayor Summit, will bring together policymakers, researchers, industry, cities, and citizens to translate societal insights into evidence-informed policy dialogue. Through permanent CurioCities Hubs, open-access toolkits, and a growing network of satellite cities, the project will create a lasting European legacy for science engagement beyond the duration of the initiative."

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
