Objective
SOCIETAS-OA (SOCIety-led TrAnsition to Sustainable Open Access) helps Europe’s scholarly societies move their journals and books to open access that are free to read and free to publish in (no author fees). Many societies are small, volunteer-led, and mission-driven. They provide trusted peer review, support multilingual scholarship, and reinvest any publishing income in their communities. However, changing from subscription income to open access is difficult without practical support, and “pay-to-publish” models can create new inequalities. SOCIETAS-OA will fund 20–30 transition pilot projects and support at least 30 societies through an open call. Each selected society will receive a step-by-step “starting package” with guidance, templates and training on governance, licensing, editorial workflows, platform and service options, discoverability, integrity safeguards, and sustainable funding choices. The project will also run peer-learning events so societies can share solutions and avoid duplicating work. Based on the pilots, SOCIETAS-OA will produce future transition pathways and business model options for different society types, co-developed with stakeholders (including research funders). All resources will be openly shared and ready for intergration into the European Diamond Capacity Hub to support long-term reuse across the European Research Area.
