Objective
Quantum Thermoelectrics in Rare-Earth and Uranium-based Materials for Energy-efficient Spintronics (Q-TREES) seeks to create a transformative materials platform utilizing rare-earth (RE) and U-based topological quantum materials (QMs) for achieving exceptional transverse thermoelectric effects (TTEs). Unlike traditional thermoelectrics, which mainly depend on longitudinal charge transport, TTEs leverage Berry curvature-driven anomalous transport and symmetry-controlled band topology, offering fundamentally different methods for energy harvesting and low-power electronics. The addition of RE-elements introduces strong spin-orbit coupling, correlated f-electron states, and tunable magnetic order, enabling a unique design space for combining topological band structures with flat-band engineering. This synergy offers unprecedented opportunities to improve thermoelectric efficiency and spin-charge interconversion, essential for the next era of scalable and energy-efficient spintronic devices. Q-TREES combines theory, crystal growth, advanced spectroscopic and transport characterization with device fabrication, with thin films growth to define design rules for RE-based topological thermoelectric materials. Using density functional theory (DFT+U) and beyond-DFT modeling, the project will identify RE- and U-candidates-such as RE-bismuthides, RE-pnictides, and kagome-derived systems-where structural distortions, Berry curvature, and flat electronic bands can be engineered to optimize TTE performance. The broader impact of Q-TREES is in connecting QMs discovery with practical applications. By establishing rare-earth topological thermoelectric as a new group of high-performance, environmentally friendly energy-conversion materials, Q-TREES addresses urgent global demands for low-power electronics, waste-heat recovery, and green-energy solutions, positioning RE- and U-based QMs at the forefront of next-generation spintronic and energy technologies.
