Objective
Solidarity in Time (SOLI-TIME) combines digital art history, critical theory, cultural studies and curatorial practice to explore how contemporary art reactivates imaginaries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), socialist Yugoslavia and decolonisation struggles to address today’s global crises and reclaim past visions of more just and sustainable futures. Through case studies, interviews and data-driven visualisations, SOLI-TIME offers the first systematic scholarly account of the ways in which contemporary artistic voices have been engaging in activating erased histories of solidarity and internationalism of NAM (1961–) to confront sociocultural practices marked by historical revisionism, post-political conformism and cultural amnesia.
The project has two main objectives: (i) to build a comprehensive corpus of contemporary art and exhibition projects (2005–2025) – comprising archival installations, essay films, curatorial interventions in museum narratives – and integrate them into a modular VANIS database hosted by the Institute of Art History in Zagreb for digital analysis and spatial visualisation of transnational networks; (ii) to develop an innovative theoretical framework combining non-linear approaches to history and time to examine the cross-media circulation of historical images and connect past emancipatory movements with urgent struggles. Results will be presented in two scientific articles, an international workshop and through participation in academic conferences, summer schools and museum lectures.
SOLI-TIME is hosted by a leading research institution in the CEE region – the Institute of Art History, strengthening my engagement with scholarly networks and advancing my goal of becoming a researcher and professor in art history and contemporary art theory. The project aligns with the EU’s framework for international cultural relations, emphasising reciprocity, multilateral cooperation, and diversity.
