Objective
The earth always provided humanity with the necessary sources and materials for energy and construction demands. Nowadays, some of the risks that are imposed at a global level are related to the depletion of fossil-fuel sources, with a direct impact on all human activities, such as road construction. Although conventional binders offer ideal performance to roads, they do harm the environment due to the high levels of greenhouse gases. To conform with these alarming challenges, the European Union has regulated by 2050, among others, to reduce emissions and maximise the reuse of construction materials. BRAVE is a cutting-edge project that comes as a game-changer. It aims to tackle this problem by incorporating to roads alternative, green binders made by biogenic components, in place of traditional, fossil-fuel binders. The synergy of these binders with reclaimed asphalt will be examined, and strategies will be recommended to increase the overall sustainability of asphalt roads. BRAVE will propose recycling measures that guarantee higher recycling rates and simultaneously do not compromise performance. To reach these goals, the postdoctoral fellow (PF) of BRAVE, Dr. Georgios Pipintakos, will employ interdisciplinary tools derived from the developing field of binder chemomechanics. Thermoanalytical techniques (i.e. Thermogravimetric Analysis) together with spectroscopy (i.e. Carbon Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) and rheology (Dynamic Shear Rheometer) will quantify the compatibility, multiple recycling and durability potential of the bio-composites. The chemomechanical links will be explored by utilising advanced multivariate statistics. The PF is the best match for this project due to his dedicated research background in bituminous binders advancements. Through a well-designed career development plan of BRAVE, the PF will acquire all the necessary missing skills and knowledge to accomplish a high-quality research project and be established as a key researcher in his field.
