Microresidue-Based Analysis of Extramasticatory Dental Damage in Late Prehistoric Iberia

Objective

MICREX employs a novel approach to reconstructing daily activities in Late Prehistoric Iberia, utilising microresidues embedded in extramasticatory dental wear and damage (EDD), a pioneering endeavour in the field. EDD, a consequence of non-masticatory use of teeth, indicates repetitive tasks across the life course. Despite its potential, bioarchaeology is constrained by two factors: the absence of standardised methodologies and scarce evidence linking wear patterns to specific materials or artefacts. MICREX addresses this gap.

The project’s objective is to develop a diagnostic protocol for detecting and identifying microresidues in various EDD types, including grooves, notching, and chipping. Using an interdisciplinary, multi-method strategy integrating Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), and Raman, MICREX seeks to characterise residue morphology and composition (spectral profiles). This distinction enables differentiation between inorganic and organic (plant and animal) materials, thereby elucidating the occupational activities undertaken by these populations. MICREX will provide unprecedented insights into intra- and inter-group dynamics, including divisions of labour by sex and age, and highlighting historically underrepresented groups—females and non-adults—thereby contributing to more inclusive narratives of the past.

The project will be hosted at the Research Centre for Anthropology and Health (CIAS, University of Coimbra), with a secondment at the University of Jaén for training in Raman spectroscopy. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, with whom the candidate has already worked, will ensure an innovative analytical protocol. Beyond archaeology, MICREX has strong translational potential in other contexts, including forensic applications, aligning with the candidate’s prior expertise and enhancing European research through methodological innovation and interdisciplinary training.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
