Bioanode-Integrated Urea Electrosynthesis via Rationally Engineered Dual-Atom Catalysts

Objective

The BIO-UREACT project aims to develop a dual-functional electrochemical system for sustainable urea production. At the cathode, rationally engineered bimetallic single-atom catalysts (bim-SACs) will drive the co-reduction of CO2 and NOₓ into urea, combining the high activity of platinum-group metals (PGMs) with the cost-efficiency of non-PGMs. Simultaneously, a microbial bioanode will oxidize organic pollutants in wastewater, enabling water purification while supplying anodic current to reduce the system’s overall energy demand. To optimize efficiency and selectivity, in-situ spectroscopic techniques will be employed to uncover the molecular mechanisms of C–N bond formation, guiding the rational design of advanced catalysts. By leveraging PGM/non-PGM synergy at the atomic scale, BIO-UREACT will enable efficient urea synthesis under ambient, low-voltage conditions, advancing the fundamental understanding of electrochemical processes and supporting the transition to a circular, low-carbon economy.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
