Advancing gender equality in R&D-intensive industries within the ERA

Objective

GAPS4ERA addresses a critical gap in the European Research Area (ERA): the limited understanding and operationalisation of inclusive gender equality practices and policies within R&D-intensive firms. While Gender Equality Plans (GEPs) have become an important policy instrument in universities and public research organisations, comparable evidence and support mechanisms remain largely absent for private-sector research environments, including startups, scale-ups and SMEs performing research and innovation activities.

The project will generate a large-scale empirical mapping of gender equality practices and policies in R&D-intensive firms across multiple industrial ecosystems. Through a mixed-method research approach combining organisational surveys, interviews and maturity-based analysis, GAPS4ERA will identify implementation patterns, governance structures and organisational dynamics shaping gender equality in innovation-driven companies.

Building on this evidence, the project will develop a maturity-based analytical framework, a digital self-assessment tool and modular training resources tailored to industrial R&D environments. These tools will be tested through pilot interventions involving at least 50 firms, combining diagnostic assessment, training, mentoring and peer-learning activities.

GAPS4ERA brings together seven partners from seven European countries, including research organisations, industrial clusters and innovation ecosystem actors with experience in gender equality initiatives and policies. By generating empirical evidence and validated implementation models, the project will support more effective ERA policies and practices promoting inclusive gender equality in industrial research environments.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
