An actionable, decision support platform to predict LDL-C response to dietary restriction of animal products

Objective

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality worldwide, with elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) representing a major causal, yet modifiable risk factor. Dietary restriction (DR) of animal products is widely recommended as a preventive strategy to lower LDL-C levels, however while some individuals experience clinically meaningful LDL-C reductions, others derive little benefit despite adherence. This heterogeneity limits the effectiveness of current population-level dietary recommendations and highlights the need for more precise prevention strategies. The present proposal aims to address this variability and translate discoveries from the FastBio study into a data-driven, clinically actionable decision support platform that predicts individual LDL-C response to animal product DR. FastBio involves longitudinal multi-omic profiling of a unique population undergoing periodic DR of animal products, providing a rich resource for identifying predictors of dietary response. The proposed platform will integrate anthropometric, biomarker, metabolic, gut microbiome, lifestyle and genetic factors to predict the magnitude of LDL-C reduction following DR and to stratify individuals according to their predicted response. It is intended as a practical decision support tool for clinicians and individuals, helping determine when dietary modification alone may be sufficient, and identifying those for whom it may delay or complement pharmacological treatment, while potentially improving adherence to preventive interventions. The project will also explore IP protection, regulatory positioning and market feasibility, leading to a preliminary business plan and commercialisation roadmap. By shifting from population-level recommendations toward prediction of individual response to dietary intervention, this project addresses a key societal challenge and aims to advance precision prevention, enabling more effective strategies for reducing CVD risk.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
