Progressive lenses on the spot - reimagining the ophthalmic value chain

Objective

In this PoC we propose to develop a Progressive Lens Generator – a device that will enable rapid, wasteless, and automated end-to-end fabrication of high-quality multifocal ophthalmic lenses, without relying on capital-intensive surfacing infrastructure or centralized manufacturing facilities. The device will be based on our ERC-funded technology, which allows the formation of high-quality optical elements. As part of the ERC, we have already demonstrated fabrication of single-vision lenses in under five minutes, with surface roughness below 1 nm and power variation surpassing industry standards.

In this project, we will extend the method to progressive prescriptions. The lenses will be fabricated in minutes, with no material waste and minimal energy consumption, replacing multi-axis grinding and polishing with a compact, self contained device.

During this PoC we will develop a lens generator prototype, construct computational models, validate the fabricated lenses using both in-house metrology and in collaboration with industry, and develop a commercialization strategy.

If successful, this project will pave the way to a fundamentally new approach to lens manufacturing, enabling decentralized, low-CapEx production of premium lenses and restructuring the highest-value segment of the $60B ophthalmic market.
