Objective
Reparative payments—i.e. reparations and compensation payments that aim to address harm—are becoming more important around the world. Our ERC funded research project on new calls for reparations (REPAIR) shows that reparative payments are emerging in new domains of life and new industries, and that they cover new types of harm. Yet many public and private actors still lack the expertise to claim, make, or assess reparative payments. They lack a systematic understanding of whether and to what extent money can compensate for harm.
The Centre for Reparative Finance (CRF) addresses this problem. The CRF is a think tank that educates the public about the problems that reparative payments raise and the solutions they can and cannot provide. It provides open access information on these payments, disseminated through white papers, policy briefs, a payments database, and public outreach. The CRF also provides clients with tailored advice on how to value, make, and assess reparative payments.
The CRF’s work is distinctive in that it is evidence-based, interdisciplinary, and victim and survivor-centered. It innovates by establishing reparative finance as a single field of applied expertise and a domain for institutional advice. It is based on the conviction that while redress is never only about money, having a systematic and comparative approach to reparative finance will serve all parties involved.
