Ultra-Thin Oxide Membrane Encapsulation for Perovskite X-Ray Detectors

Objective

Metal-halide perovskites are among the most promising materials for next-generation X-ray detectors, combining high sensitivity, fast response, and low-cost manufacturing potential. They could enable faster medical imaging, lower patient radiation doses, and more efficient industrial inspection. However, their widespread use is blocked by a major limitation: intrinsic instability. Moisture, heat, electric fields, and ionizing radiation rapidly degrade perovskites, causing signal loss and short device lifetime. SEAL-X-RA addresses this bottleneck with a radically new encapsulation strategy based on ultra-thin membranes. These membranes act as conformal, radiation-compatible barriers that protect perovskite scintillators from environmental and radiation-induced degradation without compromising optical performance. Preliminary results already show more than a tenfold improvement in radiation tolerance. Beyond X-ray detection, SEAL-X-RA introduces a platform technology for protecting unstable high-performance materials in harsh environments, with potential applications in optoelectronics, photovoltaics, and space technologies.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
