Objective
Single particle ICP-MS (SP ICP-MS) has become a powerful method for the analysis of particulate matter. While it excels for the characterisation of nanoparticulate matter, its application in the micrometre range remains limited. This is anchored in a non-constant particle transport efficiency, which rapidly declines as sizes of particles increase. This analytical blind spot limits the integration of SP ICP-MS into regulatory frameworks as well as for single cell application in life sciences and medicine.
The project “MicroExtension” aims to leverage and expand on new insights and developments from the ERC Starting Grant “NanoArchive”. It builds on a hybrid interface, which combines distinct optical and mass spectrometric single particle modes and enables a multimodal characterisation. This does not only overcome current challenges in the characterisation of microparticles but further enables the retrieval of physical characteristics, which remained elusive to standard SP ICP-MS previously. “MicroExtension” will transition the early laboratory set-up into a validated prototype and explore figures of merit, general applicability as well as market potential.
