Full field optoretinography for elderly eye health

Objective

"Full field optical coherence tomography (FFOCT) developed by my team has in recent years established its place as a leading technology for retinal cell imaging in patients. Its wide field, rapid acquisition, and robust, compact setup have allowed its successful clinical transfer in Paris and Pittsburgh in an ongoing clinical study. I developed optoretinography (ORG), the non invasive optical measurement of retinal cell function, during my ERC Consolidator grant ""Optoretina"". The objective of this POC is to add ORG measurement capacity to the clinical FFOCT device, to allow use in healthy elderly people and patients suffering from age related macular degeneration (AMD). This responds to demand from clinicians who are enthusiastic about the promising ORG results shown on my research FFOCT setups and wish to explore disease origin of AMD by comparing to healthy aging - at what stage do small drusen in healthy eyes transition to AMD, and how does this affect visual function and retinal structure? Results are expected to assist in identifying therapeutic targets for dry AMD which is a leading cause of blindness yet currently has no treatment options. On the technology side, we anticipate that this POC grant will open a new market in monitoring of retinal cell health in the elderly. The budget will cover design, build and installation of the ORG light source module to the clinical device, and detailed review and adaptation of the ergonomics including chin rest and fixation target for the cohort of aging and AMD patients."

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

INSTITUT NATIONAL DE LA SANTE ET DE LA RECHERCHE MEDICALE
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
