Objective
Energy-efficient solutions are urgently needed to reduce the environmental and economic burdens associated with controlling temperature inside buildings. A promising approach is the implementation of thermochromic smart windows. These windows integrate materials that reversibly alter their optical characteristics in response to temperature changes, automatically modifying light transmission to manage indoor climates. In hot conditions, the material turns opaque to limit solar heat intake and decrease cooling needs; in contrast, in colder conditions, it becomes transparent to permit additional sunlight for passive heating.
Our group has recently created a novel thermochromic hydrogel system, named DMFM, that overcomes limitations of current technologies such as vanadium dioxide or poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). DMFM exhibits high visible transparency at ambient temperature and rapidly turns opaque at elevated temperatures, with exceptionally large modulation of solar transmission and, notably, an adjustable transition temperature that spans the human comfort zone. By incorporating this hydrogel into a flexible encasing, we produce adaptable flexible thermochromic devices that can be readily integrated into different window configurations, including retrofitting on existing and curved constructions.
Within the LumiShield project, we will evaluate DMFM’s functionality and stability when integrated into application-relevant encasing systems and exposed to relevant environmental conditions. We intend to test prototypes not only in controlled laboratory settings but also in real-life environments to identify operational requirements and demonstrate the technology’s commercial feasibility. We will evaluate the market potential of LumiShield thermochromic windows in the greenhouse industry and in residential and commercial building applications. Together, these efforts will establish a clear pathway from laboratory validation to real-world application and market adoption.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
