Demonstration of plasma-assisted combustion for conditions representatives of high power staged aircraft engines

Objective

The EM2C laboratory and Safran Aircraft Engines are working on a collaborative action to demonstrate for the first time the beneficial effects of plasma-assisted combustion (PAC) to improve the performance and reduce the environmental footprint of aircraft engines. In this action, a series of experiments will be conducted in large-scale combustors representative of actual aeroengines to assess the potential of PAC for flame stabilization, thermoacoustic instability control, ignition, and reduction of pollutant emissions.

This work will build on the knowledge and experience acquired in previous experiments conducted under lab-scale conditions. The plasma will be produced by nanosecond repetitively pulsed (NRP) discharges, which have shown great promise owing to their effectiveness in producing large amounts of active chemical species with limited gas heating and extremely low power consumption.

The objective of the PowerPAC project is to leverage the fundamental expertise gained in the ERC GreenBlue project to ensure successful completion of the action. More specifically, the project will support a full time Research Engineer who will establish a close connection between EM2C and Safran and design the optimal plasma system for the final demonstration tests. The project will also support the purchase of this optimized plasma equipment and a market survey.

This work will provide highly valuable experience on PAC at high pressure with liquid fuels. In addition, it will help understand the practical challenges associated with the use of electrode and plasma systems in aircraft engines. A TRL of 4 is sought at the end of the project.

If successful, this work will provide validation of the PAC concept at TRL4 and open the way to system studies. The experience gained through this project will also be highly valuable for other industrial combustors such as power-production gas turbines, industrial furnaces, and plasma conversion systems such as methane plasmalysis.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
