nGHOST2Market : Bringing to market next-Generation Handling of Optical Stray-light in Telescopes

Objective

Stray light is a critical limitation in high-performance space optical instruments, affecting image quality and limiting operational performance of space missions. Current diagnostic methods provide limited capability to identify the physical origin of stray-light contributions, making their correction complex and costly. The Time-of-Flight stray-light diagnostic method developed within the ERC project nGHOST introduces a novel approach by enabling the temporal separation of stray-light contributions, allowing direct identification of their physical origin. This represents a significant breakthrough compared to conventional techniques. Interactions with industrial stakeholders have revealed a clear gap in existing capabilities and a strong demand for improved stray-light diagnostics. The objective of the ERC Proof of Concept project nGHOST2Market is to explore the feasibility of translating this scientific breakthrough into a practical diagnostic solution for the space instrumentation industry. The project will assess the potential for industrial exploitation by combining market evaluation, identification of technical needs and product–market fit, and technical validation. It will deliver a structured assessment of the commercial opportunity, define the conditions for industrial adoption, and experimentally demonstrate the capability of the technology to address real industrial needs, paving the way for future commercialization.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
