Objective
AI-RESIST is a Twinning project that aims to strengthen the research and innovation capacity of the University of Cyprus (UCY) in trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) for combating propaganda, polarization, and foreign information manipulation. The rapid advancement of large language models and multi-agent AI systems has enabled scalable, adaptive disinformation campaigns, while existing detection methods remain opaque, limited, and insufficient for cross-platform and cross-lingual challenges. AI-RESIST addresses this gap by combining mechanistic interpretability with advanced detection techniques to create transparent, auditable AI systems capable of identifying manipulative behavior both at the output and internal model levels.
The project establishes a strategic collaboration between UCY, the University of Oxford, and the Universitat Politècnica de València, leveraging complementary expertise in AI safety, interpretability, and computational propaganda. Through structured knowledge transfer, training, and joint research, AI-RESIST will strengthen and transform the research and innovation capacity of the University of Cyprus, establishing a sustainable Trustworthy AI & FIMI Unit embedded in research and training activities, and positioning UCY as an emerging European centre of excellence in analysing and mitigating AI-mediated influence operations.
Beyond scientific contributions, the project focuses on training early-career researchers and enhancing UCY’s institutional capabilities, particularly in research computing and international collaboration. By delivering open-source tools, datasets, and policy-relevant outputs, AI-RESIST will contribute to resilient and transparent digital information ecosystems aligned with EU priorities.
