Objective
The CYMYCONS project aims to strengthen research excellence and institutional capacity in Serbia in the emerging field of artificial microbial consortia for eco-friendly, sustainable biofertilisation, through a multi-level Twinning collaboration with leading European experts. European soils are increasingly affected by degradation, loss of biodiversity and disruption of nutrient cycles, while agricultural systems remain dependent on synthetic fertilisers that have long-term harmful effects on the environment, human and soil health. Addressing these challenges requires innovative approaches that restore soil biological functions and enable more sustainable nutrient management. Currently, no standardized methodology exists in Europe for the rational design and application of artificial microbial consortia integrating cyanobacteria, fungi and bacteria. CYMYCONS addresses this gap by developing a harmonized framework for the design, assembly and validation of such consortia, combining functional screening, ecological compatibility assessment and validation in soil microcosm and soil-plant systems. Through targeted knowledge transfer, 12 staff exchanges, 3 workshops, summer school and joint research activities, the project will establish advanced experimental approaches and strengthen institutional competence at UNSPMF in consortium-based biofertilisation research. At the same time, through a series of trainings, CYMYCONS is expected to result in enhanced research management capacity and technology transfer, foster long-term strategic partnerships, increase the international visibility of the coordinating institution and strengthen research infrastructure to foster innovation for eco-friendly agricultural biotechnology. By integrating scientific innovation with capacity building, CYMYCONS contributes to reducing research and innovation disparities while advancing sustainable agriculture strategies aligned with European priorities on soil health and circular bioeconomy.
