Twinning for Intersectional Mothering in the Middle Ages and Beyond

Objective

Mothering has always been performed within unequal power relations. Societal inequities through origin, class, and age intersect in
mothers’ lives and shape their treatment and work. Interdisciplinary in emphasis and scope, InterMoMA will break new ground in
Medieval and Gender Studies by combining for the first time matricentric and intersectional feminism to comparatively examine
mothering in various medieval cultures along with the rich and diverse ways in which it was practised, conceptualised, and
experienced (4th-15th c.). Given that the discourses shaping medieval mothering have contemporary resonances, InterMoMA will
also explore the interrelations between medieval and current mothering. Building on Twinning’s huge potential for networking for
excellence through knowledge transfer, training, and exchange of best practices between three institutions (UCY, UU, and FUB),
InterMoMA will work towards filling the gaps and addressing the deficiencies of UCY. The partners’ collaboration will be performed
via Coordination and Support Actions (CSA), including staff exchanges; expert visits; training; webinars; workshops; conference
organisation and attendance; a summer school; and dissemination, communication, exploitation, and outreach activities. Through
these CSA, UCY will i) improve its excellence capacity and resources in the interdisciplinary fields of Medieval and Gender Studies; ii)
enhance its networking skills; iii) foster its creativity by developing new approaches; iv) increase the mobility of its qualified staff; v)
strengthen its research management and administrative skills; vi) create a critical mass of qualified young researchers; vii) support
mothers in resuming their scholarly careers; viii) effect sustainable institutional changes by addressing the situation and
intersectionality of mothers in existing Gender Equality Plans; and viii) participate in current debates on mothering and gender
equality and diversity with enduring societal impact.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
